Video Documentary on Asian Migrant Workers by
Kuangchi Program Service
Asian Exile--The Gamble of Asia's Migrant Laborers,
produced by
Taipei's Kuangchi Progam Service, is a 53-minute video documentary
charting the journeys of three Thai factory workers from northeastern
Thailand to Taiwan and back again. The documentary reveals their
reasons for going abroad to work; their accomplishments, frustrations,
gains and losses while working abroad; their lives and future prospects
when they return home. The video and study guide can be used to
prepare prospective migrant workers for what lies in store for them if
they go to work abroad, and also to help them weigh the pros and cons
before deciding whether or not to do so. It is also useful in
assisting people in host countries to understand, accept, sympathize with
and assist migrant laborers in their countries. For copies, contact

New English Conversation TV Series and Website for
China
Taipei's Kuangchi Program Service has recently completed the production of
150 new English conversation TV programs for Mainland China. This
new series is a continuation of "Uncle Jerry's Practical Guide to
American English" which has been broadcast daily throughout Mainland
China over the Star TV Phoenix Channel for the past 9 years. Thanks
to a special subsidy from the EAO Assistancy and the China Province, the
new programs are of higher production quality than formerly. In
addition to segments shot on location in the United States, each program
ends with an evocative story or "homily", in English and
Chinese, highlighting a particular virtue, value, or spiritual truth.
David Reed, now working at KPS, edited and translated each of these
stories into English and also corrected and edited the program scripts and
subtitles. The news series, launched in early April, encourages
viewers to log onto an accompanying website (www.unclejerry.tv)
which will soon go on-line and provide a partial text and study guide for
each program. The website will gradually develop to include
additional values-based content and links to other web sites which may be
helpful and inspiring for the Chinese audience.
